New York City Harbour Lights Night Cruise
30 June 2011
The best way to witness and understand this is to take a night time cruise. Make your way to Pier 83 and step aboard your vessel. Here you can sit in comfort and marvel as your host guides you with a full commentary of your journey.
You can sit and watch the sun setting and the moon rising over the Manhattan Skyline. As darkness descends you can watch the reflection of the city lights as you view the riverside landmarks. Some of the sights on the tour include the Brooklyn Bridge, the Ellis Island immigration centre and the Statue of Liberty herself. Some 12 million immigrants passed by Liberty and went through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954, making it one of the major points of entry for migrants entering America.
The harbour itself was probably at it's busiest during World War II. At one point over 540 ships in the harbour awaiting a birth and a further 450 already sat at one of the docks or piers. The harbour was prime target German U-Boats and the bright lights of the city gave the attacking forces a good marker to aim at. Luckily things are a little more civilized now and the threat of submarine attack has long since disappeared.
A variety of food, drinks and refreshments are available on board, so you can enjoy your two hour cruise in complete comfort. There are also selections of souvenirs on sale for you to take home to remind you of your trip.
Depending on the time of your visit to the Big Apple, will depend on the availability of the cruise. During March and April the boats only run on Friday's Saturdays and Sundays and tours don't start until 7pm. Throughout the summer, these cruises run daily and from the end of September the start earlier, from around 6pm.
You will return back to Pier 83, and you are free to enjoy the rest of your evening in the bustling metropolis. With prices around $30 per person, the tour is exceptional value for money and will provide you with a unique experience. New York City at night is certainly worth seeing and it's even better to view it whilst cruising on a boat with your favourite cocktail in hand. Viewing the city from the air is one, but to look back from the river with the lights glistening in the water is a sight to behold. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and try it, you won't be disappointed.
